Business is built on the retail transaction.  A consumer/client purchased a good or service and the economy grows. Customers are the engine that drive business, which is why Marketing and Communications are so vital to the process.  After all, no one buys what they don’t know exists.  Marketing suffers some appropriate disparagement in the culture.  But there are Christian schools that seek to populate the career field with more Christians; this will bring integrity to the arena and while it may not shift the public perception to a more positive light, it can’t hurt!  It is with this in mind that Christian Universities Online presents the Top 10 Marketing and Communications Degree Programs for 2017.

Asbury University

Asbury University is a private, coeducational, four-year, Christian institution located in Wilmore, Kentucky. Founded in 1890 by John Wesley Hughes, the University was known as the Kentucky Holiness College before changing its name in honor of Bishop Francis Asbury, a circuit-riding evangelist who is known as the “Father of American Methodism”. Though originally established in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, today the university is nondenominational and welcomes students and faculty from all Christian walks and traditions. The University is situated on a suburban campus of 65 acres and is located approximately twenty minutes southwest of Lexington. Nearly 2,000 students are enrolled, including over 1,600 undergraduates, representing more than forty states and over two dozen foreign countries. The University’s average student to faculty ratio is 11 to 1. Asbury boasts more than 22,000 living alumni who are located all over the world, serving and leading in every state in the Union and at least 80 foreign nations.

Asbury University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1940. A variety of academic programs are offered by the University through its several colleges and schools. Asbury offers three programs in the areas of Marketing and Communication, including two undergraduate majors in Marketing and Communication and a Master of Arts in Communication with an emphasis in Digital Storytelling. This latter program is a 30-45 credit hour program, is SACS accredited and is offered in a hybrid format, mixing online and on-campus classes. The University’s Communication major is offered through the School of Communication Arts and offers concentrations in Public Relations, Social Media, Leadership, and International Communication. Asbury’s Marketing program is available as either a traditional (on-campus) major or minor and is offered through the Howard Dayton School of Business.

Union University

Located in Jackson, Tennessee, Union University is a private, evangelical Christian, liberal arts institution. Union University was established in 1823 as the Jackson Male Academy shortly after the western portion of the state opened for settlement. In 1925 the school, by then having adopted its current name, became formally affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. Today, Union University’s mission is to provide students with a “Christ-centered education that promotes excellence and character development in service to Church and Society.” The University has received a number of major recognitions, including being named one of the Best Regional Universities in the South 2016 by U.S. News & World Report and named a Best Value College 2015 by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.

Union University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1948. More than 100 programs of study are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and the University is divided into several colleges and schools. Union University offers three major undergraduate programs in the areas of marketing and Communication including a Marketing major, a Communication Studies major, and a Digital media Communications major. Available through the McAfee School of Business Administration, Union University’s Marketing major is AACSB accredited (Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business International) and is taught within the context of Christian character, faith and ethics. It is through Union’s Communication Arts Department that the University’s Communication majors are offered. Trevecca Nazarene University

Trevecca Nazarene University is a private, coeducational, comprehensive, Christian liberal arts institution located in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally established in 1901 as the Pentecostal Literary and Bible Training School, the school was founded by Cumberland Presbyterian minister J. O. McClurkan. Once a part of the Pentecostal Alliance, the school’s name was later changed to Trevecca College for Christian Workers in 1911 when bachelor’s degrees were first introduced into the school’s offerings. In 1917, the school became an official college of the Church of Nazarene and underwent several changes, earning its university status in 1995. Trevecca Nazarene University’s mission is to be a “Christian community providing education for leadership and service.” The school’s purpose and intent is that its “graduates be socially-conscious, globally-aware, and actively-engaged individuals who are developing holistically in the cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual areas of being.” Trevecca Nazarene University boasts a total enrollment figure of more than 2,500, including over 1,800 undergraduate students – with an average student to faculty ratio of 17 to 1.

College of the Ozarks

The College of the Ozarks (commonly referred to as C of O) is a private, Christian liberal arts institution located in Point Lookout, Missouri.  Since its beginning in 1907, C of O has followed a highly unique practice of having students work to earn their keep rather than pay tuition. Through the combination of state grants, scholarships and the school’s on-campus work program, students are charged a grand total of $0 in tuition costs and as a result C of O has earned the nicknamed “Hard Work U”. Placing a strong emphasis on “character” education, C of O endeavors to provide students with a quality Christian education, especially students who are found worthy but lack the means to obtain such an education. C of O openly discourages debt and does not participate in any federal, state or private loan programs; the university further leads by example and has no institutional debt of any kind. C of O is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate degrees.

In addition to the real-world work experience the school’s tuition program provides, the College of the Ozarks offers a variety of academic programs with more than 25 majors, 36 minors, and several pre-professional programs. C of O offers two programs in the areas Marketing and Business. The first is a Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. Students who choose this emphasis spend an additional twelve hours in upper-level marketing courses which are designed to complement their Business Administration major. Specific courses include options such as Advertising, Retail Management and International Marketing.  The second program is a major in Communication Arts. This major is designed to prepare students who will be “competent communicators in today’s diverse and evolving business, professional and academic fields.” Areas of emphasis include Journalism, Public Relations, Speech Communication and Video Production.

Abilene Christian University

Abilene Christian University (ACU) is a private, coeducational, Christian institution of higher education located in Abilene, Texas. Affiliated with the Churches of Christ, ACU was originally established in 1906 as a small learning institution in West Texas, having grown out of an idea held by A.B. Barret and Charles Roberson and backed by the Churches of Christ in Abilene. The mission of ACU is clearly stated as having the goal of educating students for “Christian service and leadership throughout the world.” Daily chapel services and mandatory Bible courses are required and the majority of students spend time volunteering for community service. More than 4,500 students are currently enrolled at ACU, including over 3,700 undergraduates, hailing from nearly every state in the Union and more than 40 foreign nations. Abilene Christian University is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and offers both undergraduate and graduate-level degrees. Messiah College

Messiah College is a private Christian college of the liberal arts and applied arts and sciences, located in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, about eight miles outside of Harrisburg. Established by the Brethren in Christ Church in 1909, the school was originally called the Messiah Bible School and Missionary Training Home. By the early 1920s the school evolved into a junior college and in 1951 was renamed Messiah College, having developed its initial four-year college program. Today, though influenced by its historic affiliation with the Brethren in Christ Church, Messiah College is nondenominational. Messiah College’s mission is to “educate men and women toward maturity of intellect, character and Christian faith in preparation for lives of service, leadership and reconciliation in church and society.”

Messiah College is accredited through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers more than 80 majors and pre-professional programs as well as nearly two dozen graduate-level programs. Bryan College

Bryan College is a private, coeducational, Christian liberal arts institution located in Dayton, Tennessee. Established in 1930, Bryan College was founded as a response to the Scopes “Monkey” Trial of 1925. The College was named for William Jennings Bryan who expressed the desire that an institution would be built in Dayton which would “teach truth from a Biblical perspective.”Founded upon this vision, the College’s original desire was to provide “for the purpose of establishing, conducting and perpetuating a university for the higher education of men and women under auspices distinctly Christian and spiritual, as a testimony to the supreme glory of the Lord Jesus Christ, and to the Divine inspiration and infallibility of the Bible.” Designated the William Jennings Bryan College in 1958; the name was then shorted to its current form in 1993. Bryan College’s mission is to educate “students to become servants of Christ to make a difference in today’s world.”

Bryan College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1969. Bryan College offers a variety of adult and graduate studies as well an abundance of undergraduate majors in a wide range of areas. Calvin College

Calvin College is a private, Christian liberal arts institution located in Grand Rapids, Michigan on a 400 acre campus. Established in 1876, Calvin College is named for the well-known Protestant Reformer, John Calvin, who was a leader in the reformation movement of the 16th-century. Dallas Baptist University

Dallas Baptist University (DBU) is a private, Christian liberal arts institution located in Dallas, Texas on a beautiful 292 acre campus which overlooks Mountain Creek Lake in the hills of Southwest Dallas. Affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, DBU was originally founded in 1898 as Decatur Baptist College, the first two-year institution of higher education in the state of Texas. Liberty University

Liberty University is a private, coeducational, Christian institution located in Lynchburg, Virginia. Established in 1971 as Liberty Baptist College, the young College achieved university status just five years later in 1976. A high ranking institution, Liberty has grown to be the fifth largest university in the United States and the largest Christian university in the world.
