We are pleased to follow up our Best Online Christian Colleges Guide 2015 with this ranking and guide of intentionally Christian institutions offering online graduate degree programs. The flexibility of these graduate degree programs and their affordability are opening up new and exciting opportunities for individuals across the globe. Geographical, financial, and stage of life barriers are being broken down through online education. Online education continues to exceed enrollment figures of traditional education and continues to gain credibility among institutional leadership. We hope this ranking serves to be a valuable resource for students and families researching Christian higher education.

This ranking begins with schools that are accredited by at least one of the following organizations: the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS), the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), or the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). In addition to this accreditation requirement, every school in this list offers at least one graduate degree completely online. We then took this list of schools and ranked them based on the factors of tuition cost and the number of degree programs they offered. Tuition cost was weighted at 30%, while the number of degree programs category was weighted at 70% of the ranking score. Data presented in this ranking was procured through individual survey responses and publicly available resources.

Baylor University

Baylor University, a private Christian university and a nationally ranked research institution, was first chartered in 1845 and is located in Waco, Texas. Of Baylor’s many recognitions, the school has been ranked No. 71 in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual review of colleges and universities; named one of the Best Colleges for African Americans in a list compiled by M. Clayton & Associates; and listed as a “Best Buy” for 2015 by Fiske Guide to Colleges. Baylor currently has one fully accredited online graduate degree program available in Business Administration (M.B.A.). Baylor’s program is designed to offer a flexible education option to working adults and offers their online courses in an accelerated format for faster degree completion. Baylor boasts a high 75% graduation rate and an 87% retention rate and their student-to-faculty ratio is 15:1.

Bethesda University of California is a private, accredited Christian university located in Anaheim California. Founded by Dr. David Yonggi Cho in 1976 for the purpose of preparing leaders who have a Biblical foundation and vision for global evangelization, Bethesda’s mission is particularly aimed towards Korean/English speaking students. Graduation rates at Bethesda are 78% with a retention rate of 91%. Bethesda currently offers two online graduate degree programs: Master of Arts in Biblical Studies and Master of Divinity. The online programs are hosted via Moodle and tuition costs fall into the low-range for degrees of this type.

University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB), located Belton, Texas, was established in 1845 and is the oldest continuously operating college in the state of Texas. A private, co-educational institution, the school is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The school has a 16:1 student/faculty ratio and a student body representing 27 foreign nations. UMHB currently offers one online graduate degree program: M.S. Ed. in Sport Administration. The program consists of 36 total credit hours and may be earned fully online. Franciscan University of Steubenville is a catholic university located in Steubenville, Ohio and founded in 1946 by the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular. Franciscan has a student/faculty ratio of 15:1 and nearly 75% of the faculty doctorate or terminal degrees. Faulkner has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top 10% for their graduation and retention rates (73% and 87%, respectively). Franciscan currently offers three online master degree programs in Business Administration; Education; and Catechetics. Bluffton University, a Mennonite affiliated institution, was founded in 1899 and is located in Bluffton, Ohio. Bluffton currently offers one online master’s degree program in Business Administration (M.B.A). This degree program is offered as a collaborative effort by three institutions affiliated with the Mennonite Education Agency: Bluffton University, Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) in Virginia and Goshen College in Indiana. By offering one program through three schools, students are given access to a large group of professors with diverse backgrounds from each of the three partner schools. Students may choose from which of the schools their accredited degree comes from, or have one selected for them. The collaborative MBA program follows a cohort model (where students move through the program together) and with an accelerated learning schedule so that degrees may be completed in as little as 22 months. Two residencies (including a one-week international residency) are required of students. All related books, an iPad, and all expenses during the two residencies are included in the tuition cost.

Northwest has a 43% graduation rate and a retention rate of 82%. Class sizes average 12 students with a 17 student max. North Park currently offers five online master degree programs in the areas of Business Administration; Management; Educational Administration; Human Resource management; and Nonprofit Administration. Virginia Beach Theological Seminary (VBTS) was established in 1996 for the purpose of training up pastors, missionaries, and Christian workers. Hosted by Colonial Baptist Church, VBTS seeks to foster a culture of mentorship and is committed to training students within the context of the local church. VBTS offers one online graduate degree program: Master of Biblical Studies. Earned completely online, most of the Biblical Studies classes are video live-streamed through VBTS’s UStream channel. Online students are given the option of watching lectures live and participating in the class via online chat, or they may choose to watch the recorded lectures later. VBTS professors employ a number of methods for instruction including discussion forums, peer critiques, directed reading/written assignments, and more. Students may participate in the class, upload assignments, and access necessary resources via Populi, a web-based learning management system.

Following an asynchronous model, courses are both flexible yet structured and students may listen to lectures and complete assignments on their own schedule within the deadlines given.
